Diaulos

P062The diaulos is a sprint event that was organized for the first time at Olympia in 724 BC. The athletes ran twice the length of the stadion. The style of running was the same as in the stadion, but diaulos-runners needed more endurance and had to take a difficult turn halfway. That is why, according to Philostratus, they had to be built somewhat stronger than stadion-runners.

This potsherd with the picture of a diaulos-runner is a piece of a vase that was given as a prize to the winner of the diaulos-contest at the Panathenaic games. It has the inscription “I am for the diaulos-runner”.
