Poem celebrating the victory of Kyniska:

My forefathers and brothers are kings of Sparta
I, Kyniska, was victorious with my team of horses, fast of feet,
and I have erected this statue. I may say that I am the only woman
in all of Greece to have obtained this garland.


This poem is written on the base of the statue in Olympia, which was excavated by German archaeologists. (I. Olympia 160) Under the poem is written the name of the sculptor, Apelleas, son of Kallikles. Because this was a famous poem, it was integrated in a Byzantine anthology, the Anthologia Palatina, and in this way it was also preserved through the literary tradition.
