Plato, Leges VIII 833c-d

In the ideal world of Plato men and women were equal and had to receive an equal education. After their sixth year, the children were separated by sex: girls followed lessons together with other girls, boys with other boys. As preparation for war they had to be trained in speed and strength.

For the women we shall organize the stadion, the diaulos, the hippios and the dolichos for little girls, who run naked. They will compete on the racetrack itself. For the girls of thirteen years and older the co-education will continue until their marriage, not after their twentieth birthday, but at least until they are eighteen. But they should be properly dressed to compete in these races.

Greek

The hippios is a running contest over a length of four stadia. From six to twelve year, girls ran naked, from thirteen to eighteen or twenty with clothes on.
