Galenus, Protrepticus 11

The doctor Galenus disapproves of the unhealthy habits of the athletes.

Nobody has such a bad physical condition as them, if we should Hippocrates, who said: “The top condition which they pursue, is dangerous.” Also the line “Training in health, moderation of food and not shrinking from efforts’ is beautifully phrased by Hippokrates and is praised by everybody. But the athletes do exactly the opposite: they do exagerated efforts and stuff themselves with food. They ignore all the words of the old Hippocrates, as if they are drunks. For he proposed a health program: being moderate in everything: efforts, food, drinks, sleep and sex. But they train much too hard every day and are subjected to a forced diet, so that they are often eating until midnight.
